Youth Ministry at Fernwood

A Place Where You Belong!

Fernwood is a unique Christian community that seeks to build bridges of faith and relationships  among a diverse group of teens in the Spartanburg community. The sole purpose of the ministry is to proclaim and live out a bold faith in Jesus Christ which seeks to transform the individual, community and world. The Fernwood Youth ministry is made up of adults and teenagers leading and working to build a faith community that is supportive and involved in the lives of our teenagers.  As a boy, Jesus grew in favor with God and man through the powerful influence of his faith community and biological family. Fernwood seeks to create a family atmosphere involving the churches adults, traditions and worship to foster the unique identity that  makes up Fernwood Baptist. Having a place to be known and loved is at the heart of the gospel and the youth ministry at Fernwood.

 Study

 Diamonds in the Rough

Diamonds are not found in the state in which we see in show cases of jewelry stores. The finished products that we see are the result of a process of cutting, cleaning, and polishing. Perhaps the metaphor of a rough diamond being formed and presented in its most beautiful state illustrates the lives of adolescents. They are beautiful creations of God that have not yet reached their final shape or luster.  Teens will be shaped by many things in life such as family background, culture, life experiences, peers and identity. Teens are all on a journey to become more than they are in their present state. As Christ followers the metaphor of the diamond illustrates that we all are in a process of being shaped, polished and cleaned by God's grace and Christ like living. On Wednesday evenings Fernwood Baptist youth meet at 6:15 p.m. in the Nexus for a variety of learning experiences that will help shape and reflect beautiful images of Christ's love through their unique personalities. Below are a few ways that we become better disciples. All session include scripture reading related to the particular topic.

  Missions

Making a difference in the world is a unique call of all Christians. We are to share the gospel always in word or deed as we go about our lives. The Fernwood youth are involved in a number of mission projects both locally and away from home. Some local projects involve Christmas in Action, Habitat for Humanity, Total Ministries & the Soup Kitchen. Each Summer we participate in a week long missions project. In the past these projects have been associated with Passport and Mountain Top.

 RECREATION

Our word for this is Camaraderie. God has given us the wonderful gift of play and renewal. Each Sunday night at 6pm our youth get together for a meal and fellowship. A variety  of active and non-active games are played. Two youth favorites are the underground church and dodge ball.  Other events include a yearly Halloween Party and Super Bowl Party. Camaraderie is a great time just to be together and build friendships.

Worship is the heart beat of any church. Our gifted youth also participate in worship through various leadership roles. Youth are given opportunities to participate through handbell choirs, Instrumentals and youth choir. Each Sunday at 5pm our community youth choir practices in the music suite. Our music associate, Rusty Keesler, directs our youth through a broad range of music that is used to teach great truths in the faith and help our youth lead worship through music. Each year our youth also attend Festival By The Sea. At this conference our youth attend with hundreds of other teens to practice and present a concert of spiritual music.
